Roots define us, tell
us who we are, give us
life beyond the now,
and make us whole.
Where, then to dig?
Through annals long
forgot? In countries
far away? In tongues
lost to the ear?
Deep into the earth lie
bones of former selves
with hopes of greater
things, of better lives,
of peaceful souls.
How will our future
kin make sense of who
we are, and how we’ve
lived? For when they
seek their roots it’s us
they’ll find.
